How do the Zags keep it going?
What a tremendous success story. It is amazing how many programs aspire to be the Gonzaga of the East, West, South or North (pick one). How do they keep it going? This fall I spent some time in Spokane with the Gonzaga administration. To me it was easy to see why. Great Leadership. Mike Roth the Athletic Director has assembled a great bunch of folks and then empowers them to do their job. Additionally his staff has a unique understanding of the program and the priorities of importance. They understand what Mark Few and his staff has been able to accomplish and they use that success to build other assets. Also Mike has developed a strong inner circle of his top level management who understand the culture and use it to their benefit. Probably no one outside Zagnation could tell you who is the Athletic Director at Gonzaga. Yet Mike has been able to assemble a quality administrative team that maximizes Zag assets by working together with one common focus—-keeping the Zags as every mid-majors’ wannabe model.
