A Second Thought On the McGuire Debacle
My last post focused on doing the right thing even knowing it could be painful in the present. Unbelievably in the steroid and amphetamine era, the leadership of professional baseball demonstrated an incredible lack of being able to see the future. Even if the concept of doing the right thing was not present, not being able to see the huge public relations nightmare and ultimate cost in real revenues due to extreme sour taste left in all the fans mouth, reluctance of corporate America to tie their wagon to a an organization fraught with perceived cheaters and a generation of disillusioned youth, Bud Selig and the owners (all who are smart folks) really showed a genuine lack of vision. Just like the sub-prime interest rate, it was inevitable that the performing-enhancing drug culture would cause a “crash and burn” environment.
